## What they offer

Crocodile Bay has been running fishing trips out of Puerto Jiménez since 1999, and it's still one of the best-known names for anglers heading to Costa Rica's far south. The setup is simple: you fly into the little airstrip at Puerto Jiménez, stay on site, and head out each morning with one of the resort's captains.

The lodge side has changed a lot since this site first wrote about it. Guests now stay at **Botánika Osa Peninsula**, a resort in Hilton's Curio Collection built on the same grounds, with rainforest residences that range from studios to 3-bedroom homes. The fishing operation and marina carry on under the Crocodile Bay name.

## The boats

The fleet mixes smaller and larger boats so you can match the boat to the day:

- **24 and 25 foot Boston Whalers**, handy for inshore fishing in the gulf and along the coast.
- **33 and 35 foot Strike boats**, built for offshore runs after billfish and tuna.

Tackle for both inshore and offshore fishing is supplied.

## What you fish for

Golfo Dulce and the nearby coast are known for inshore species such as roosterfish, cubera snapper, amberjack and snook. Offshore, the targets are blue and black marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo.

The resort fishes all year and publishes a month-by-month guide. In broad strokes, it lists February and March as prime sailfish months, July and August as marlin and tuna time, and October through December as a good mixed season with dorado, marlin and tuna.

## Where you leave from

Everything happens in **Puerto Jiménez**, on the east side of the Osa Peninsula facing Golfo Dulce. The resort sits right beside the airstrip, which has short domestic flights from San José. Boats run from the resort's own marina, so there's no early-morning drive to a dock.

For visiting yachts, the resort describes a bigger marina for boats up to 250 feet as a project it's building, and pitches it as the closest full-service marina to the Panama Canal. If you're sailing in, contact the marina first to find out what's actually open, rather than assuming the full plan is finished.

## Who it suits

- Anglers who want a fishing-first trip with boats, captains and tackle all handled in one place.
- Mixed groups, since non-fishing partners can book from more than 20 tours, including guided wildlife walks, canopy zip-lining and dolphin and whale watching in the gulf.
- Travelers who want a base near Corcovado National Park, one of the wildest corners of the country.

Sailors looking for a sailing charter won't find one here. For sailing trips farther up the coast, see our [Southern Pacific](/southern-pacific/) section.

## Good to know before you book

- Getting there is part of the trip. Flying into Puerto Jiménez is far quicker than the long drive down from San José.
- Packages are put together on request, combining nights, fishing days and tours, so ask for a quote that matches your mix.
- Golfo Dulce is one of the few places in the world where humpbacks from both hemispheres turn up at different times of year, which makes whale watching a good add-on.
- The green season (roughly May to November) is wet on the Osa Peninsula, with heavy afternoon rain. Mornings are often the best time on the water.
