Los Sueños Marina sits inside the Los Sueños Resort and Marina community on Herradura Bay, on the Central Pacific coast. It's now run under the Safe Harbor marina brand and offers wet and dry slips, a fuel dock and a ship's store. It suits visiting yachts, sportfishing crews and anyone chartering a boat out of Herradura or Jacó.

What they offer

Los Sueños is the big resort marina of Costa Rica's Central Pacific. It's part of the gated Los Sueños Resort and Marina community in Herradura Bay, a short drive north of Jacó, and it's managed today under the Safe Harbor marina brand. The marina describes itself as the first government-approved marina to operate in Costa Rica, and it's the home port of a large sportfishing fleet.

For boaters, the basics are all here: wet slips, dry stack storage, a fuel dock with high-speed pumps, shore power and fresh water at the slips, showers, restrooms and a ship's store selling ice, drinks and boat supplies. The site is gated with 24-hour security and dock carts for hauling gear.

The slips and services

  • Wet and transient slips: 200 slips that take boats from 30 to 180 feet overall, with a maximum beam listed at 32.5 feet.
  • Dry storage: 166 dry slips for smaller boats, with an in-and-out rack system, outdoor open storage and valet launch and haul.
  • Fuel: regular gas and diesel, daily from 6 am to 6 pm.
  • Office: open 7 am to 5 pm daily, and the marina monitors VHF 16.

If you're arriving from abroad, ask the marina office ahead of time how they can help with clearing in, since entry rules and paperwork change from time to time.

Where it is

Herradura Bay sits on the Central Pacific coast, roughly 90 minutes by road from San José and the main international airport. Jacó is about 10 minutes south. The bay is a natural stop for boats working the coast between Puntarenas and Quepos, and it's a short run from here to the islands of the Gulf of Nicoya.

The marina sits inside a much larger resort: there's a Marriott hotel on the property, plus villas and condominiums, a golf course and a Marina Village with restaurants and shops. The hills behind the resort are forested, and it's common to hear howler monkeys calling from the trees in the early morning.

Who it suits

  • Visiting yachts looking for a secure, full-service berth in the middle of the Pacific coast.
  • Sportfishing crews. Los Sueños calls itself the billfish capital, and the resort hosts the Signature Triple Crown billfish series, which runs in legs from January to March.
  • Charter guests. Many sportfishing boats, sailing yachts and catamaran day trips leave from here, so it's an easy base if you want to get out on the water without a long transfer.
  • Families and non-boaters staying at the hotel or a rental villa who want to book a day on the water.

Good to know before you book

  • Dry season on the Central Pacific runs roughly December to April, and it's the busiest time at the marina. Book slips early if you're coming during tournament season.
  • The resort is gated, so if you're meeting a charter boat, get the exact dock and meeting point from your captain and allow time at the entrance.
  • Slip rates, transient availability and dry storage limits change, so check directly with the marina office rather than relying on old listings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just show up with my boat?

Transient slips are available, but it's sensible to contact the marina office before you arrive, especially from January to March when the billfish tournaments fill the docks.

Is there fuel at Los Sueños?

Yes. The fuel dock sells gas and diesel daily from 6 am to 6 pm.

How far is Los Sueños from San José?

It's roughly 90 minutes by road from San José, depending on traffic, and about 10 minutes from Jacó.

What size boats can it take?

Wet and transient slips take boats from 30 to 180 feet overall. Dry storage is for smaller boats, generally under about 37 to 41 feet.

Can I charter a boat here without staying at the resort?

Yes. Many sportfishing and sailing charters operate from the marina, and you don't need to be a hotel guest to book one.
