Guides

The fishing coasts

  • Guanacaste and Papagayo: offshore and inshore trips depending on the operator and season, from boats such as Papagayo Sport Fishing and Yellow Fin Charters. Check the real departure point, since many charters sell to several beach towns at once.
  • Los Sueños and Herradura: a major sportfishing base. Los Sueños Marina gives quick access to both coastal grounds and deeper water.
  • Quepos: Marina Pez Vela is a busy marina with a big charter fleet. A "Manuel Antonio fishing trip" usually boards here.
  • Golfito and Golfo Dulce: sheltered inshore water plus the open Pacific. Banana Bay Marina is built around sportfishing, and Fish Hook Marina & Lodge pairs slips with rooms.

Know what kind of trip you want

A half-day inshore outing and a full day offshore are very different trips. Beginners often enjoy a relaxed run close to the coast; experienced anglers may want a particular species or technique. Ask the captain what's realistic for your month, what the sea is likely to do and how long the run out takes.

Sailfish and marlin are what Costa Rica is famous for, and they're catch and release. Other species have their own rules, and you'll need a fishing license: the crew should explain it before you leave the dock. Our sportfishing guide covers seasons, species and licenses.

What a good charter tells you

A named boat and captain, a passenger limit, the safety gear, the exact departure point, an honest weather and cancellation policy, and what's included: tackle, bait, food, drinks, license and taxes. A serious operator won't guarantee a catch. Ask about shade and seasickness too, especially with kids.

For current prices and availability, use each operator's official booking or inquiry page.
