Why marinas matter even if you don't own a boat

Costa Rica's marinas range from full yacht facilities with a boatyard to small waterfront spots with a few slips and a restaurant. The useful question isn't which looks best in photos, but which has the services your boat and plans need. And if you've never owned a boat, a marina is still where many catamaran cruises, sailing trips and fishing charters begin.

Guanacaste

Marina Papagayo serves the protected bays of the Papagayo Peninsula. Around Flamingo, operators like Serendipity Charters and Manta Ray Sailing sell boat days; the marina itself is a separate business that manages slips and services. If you're staying in Tamarindo, Potrero or Conchal, check which dock your tour really uses.

Central Pacific

Los Sueños Marina in Herradura is a big sportfishing and yacht base, and Puerto Azul Hotel & Yacht Club sits in the Gulf of Nicoya near Puntarenas. Farther south, Marina Pez Vela in Quepos has wet slips, a yacht yard and many of the Manuel Antonio boat tours. A tour ticket doesn't give you the run of the private docks, though.

Golfito and the south

Golfo Dulce is sheltered and surrounded by rainforest. Banana Bay Marina combines slips, sportfishing and a restaurant, and Fish Hook Marina & Lodge has a small marina, rooms and a waterfront restaurant. Arriving from abroad means formal clearance: contact your marina, the port authorities and an agent before you sail in.

How to compare marinas

Boat owners should check length, beam and draft limits, approach depth, power, water, fuel, pump-out, haul-out, contractors, security and how far ahead to book. If you need help with customs and immigration, confirm the marina's current process instead of trusting an old directory. Tour customers only need the exact check-in spot, how to get there and the right operator.

Marina rates change with boat size, season and service, so we don't print them. Each marina's page links to its official dockage or reservations page.
